GOLF COURSE OF THE BELGAUM GOLF ASSOCIATION - A FLASHBACK
Golf has not been an unknown entity for most of the residents of Belgaum. The Cantonment of Belgaum had carved out some land for a Golf Course from its land at the center of the city even during the British days. Of course, the membership to this course was not available to the public at large and it used to waver according to the whims and fancies of the powers that be at a particular point of time.
In 1997, some golf enthusiasts of Belgaum decided to form what is today known as Belgaum Golf Association (BGA), a registered body, to spread the virtues of being a "Golfer" and also to explore whether a Public Golf Course can be created in or around the City of Belgaum. Fortunately for the Association, some of the Karnataka Government officials in Belgaum (and being golfers) were equally enthusiastic about the whole concept.
With the concerted efforts of the members and others, in 2001, BGA managed to obtain lease holdings of 168 acres of land from Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC) on the outskirts of Belgaum City. The project work for a golf course was swiftly energized and in less than a year, an 18 hole golf course was made ready to begin playing with "Browns" instead of "Greens". Subsequently, all the "Browns" were converted into "Greens" and today there is full fledged Golf Course with all requisite facilities. It is imperative to mention at this point that this golf course has "arisen" more out of "will power" than the wealth and it is now an achievement of immense value for the citizens of North Karnataka and Goa. There is more work to be done to bring this golf course to international standards.
In the early days, when we were just dreaming of crafting a golf course out of this ambiguous terrain, came the men, machines and means to transform it into a magnificent golfing landscape.
BGA acknowledges the immense contributions of:
